Welcome to our International Scholar Spotlight!
This spotlight features scholar Evelyn Tevere, a biochemist from Argentina who came to the US to further her studies in Parasitology by working with researchers at UGA's Center for Tropical & Emerging Global Diseases.
Evelyn is 29 years old and graduated from Universidad Nacional de Rosario. In 2017 she started her PhD at the Institute of Molecular and Celular Biology of Rosario, under the supervision of Dr. Julia Cricco. Since 2021 she has taught parasitology at the university. In February she was awarded with a bursary from Santa Fe government which supports women scientists to conduct research stays abroad. This grant allowed Evelyn to study in Dr. Ronald Drew Etheridge laboratory, where she studied heme and hemoglobin uptake in the Trypanosoma cruzi endocytic null lines developed there.
Evelyn states: "Coming to the UGA is a honor for me, for the quality of the research in parasitology that is carried out here. My goal is to contribute to the understanding of a fundamental aspect in the biology of T. cruzi, as is the heme transport. The results of the experiments performed here not only will helps us to deepen our knowledge, but will also open more questions to continue studying this fascinating parasite."
In her scholar spotlight interview, Evelyn reflects on the challenge of transportation upon her arrival: experiencing walking hills for the first time between classes and problems with limited public transportation. However she is appreciative of her host who helped her settle in to the US , including helping her navigate Walmart! She greatly valued the opportunity to study with researchers from around the world during her time at UGA.
