Created by student docent Janie Millwood, this tour stop explores the ongoing tri-state water wars between Georgia, Florida and Alabama. It offers a preview of content from our upcoming exhibit, "Drinkable Water in Georgia" opening in the Hargrett Library Gallery in July 2021.
Water allocation in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee Flint (ACF) and Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa (ACT) river basins has led to an ongoing interstate “Water War” between the states of Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The conflict arose due to competing uses between the states. Georgia is primarily concerned with allocation of water for municipal use in the growing Atlanta-metro area. Meanwhile, downstream Alabama and Florida require much of that water for their own uses.
