Internal controls are tools and techniques that management uses to ensure that they meet their objectives in a number of different areas.  It can be said that a comprehensive framework of internal control is an organization's first line of defense in guarding against loss, misuse, theft, and abuse of the organization's assets.  However, the consequences of a breakdown in internal controls can be wide-ranging and severe.
