"During the summer of 1988 the predominantly black Roxbury neighborhood of Boston experienced a series of shooting incidents in which more than a dozen young people were killed or severely injured. Most of the shootings were drug related, and many involved members of youth gangs.
"For weeks, the wave of violence was splashed across the front pages and the nightly news. The Roxbury community was both frightened at the dangerous proliferation of weapons, and angry at the distorted view of their neighborhood that was being depicted in the media.
"WCVB's nightly news magazine CHRONICLE joined with NEWSWEEK correspondent Sylvester Monroe to go inside the Roxbury story'to find out what motivates teen gangs and what the community feels should be done about the problem. The program was also intended to show a different side of Roxbury: the parents trying to raise children under difficult circumstances, and the youngsters pursuing the dream of a better future.
"We believe we achieved our goals. Our white viewers learned some important lessons, and the black community appreciated that we came into the neighborhood not to record another night of terror, but to show the normal, everyday side of life that is too often neglected.
"CHRONICLE is entirely locally produced. Now in its 7th year, the program broadcast five nights a week at 7:30 pm."'1988 Peabody Awards entry form.
