On June 1, 1980, the Cable News Network officially started broadcasting, making history as the first ever 24-hour news television channel. Ted Turner knew that there were other people who, like him, couldn’t watch the news at the normal times it was shown on television, mostly 6 pm, 7 pm, and 11 pm. So he took a risk in launching the new channel with a budget of just $30 million. The channel was originally mocked, called “Chicken Noodle News,” and even denied access to the White House press room.
While the station got off to a shaky start, CNN distinguished itself from competitors with coverage of the Gulf War and the Challenger explosion and became one of the leading news channels. Founded on the principle of unbiased news, CNN hosts a series of programs to share news reports produced around the world. Today, CNN is still headquartered in Atlanta but broadcasts from New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles and airs globally through CNN International in over 200 countries and territories.
